This series contains principals' memorandums, letters written by the Education Committee, and files relating to specific employees. The principals' memoranda were directed primarily to the staff and relate to topics such as after-hours assignments, property and school supplies, students and grades, staff meetings, and school activities such as pep rallies and dances. The series also includes a list of athletic lettermen, a list of former students employed in defense industries, and a list of employees from October 1940. The letters by the Educational Committee were directed to students, Indian agents, vendors, and others and concern student and staff referrals, student admissions, students' personal matters, book orders, and supplies, including farm animals. The materials covering employees primarily include summer and weekly work schedules and letters of recommendation. There is also a folder for the nursery school, which contains mainly applications for admission to the nursery.

The Sherman Institute was established in 1900, as a successor to the Perris Indian School (Perris, Calif.), after the water supply to the previous school was deemed insufficient. By 1901 a site in the city of Riverside was selected, at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Jackson Street. On July 19, 1901, the cornerstone was laid for the new school building of Sherman Institute, and the school officially opened on September 9, 1902.
